When
we lost our sweet and wonderful Dakota both myself and my little guy
Gizmo a Yorkie grieved very badly. Suddenly Giz's big sister was gone and it
felt like he had no reason to run to the window and bark at the people and
dogs passing by anymore. He spent most of his day in the bedroom now. The
more he grieved the worse I felt. I knew he needed a companion and me, well I
wasn't doing well either. The question was how do you find just the right
one. Gizmo was now eleven years old and had only known his sweet, loving and
patient big sister Dakota since he was a puppy.
I went to many shelters looking for just the right dog for him and thought I
had found a new sister. However, it didn't work out. I had just about giving
up on finding the right dog for Gizmo and myself. After months of looking I
got a call from a very upset college student on Thanksgiving day, I had just
put the turkey in the oven. The young college student who found my website on
the Internet, Petseverlasting.com,
realized I lived in her area and told me how she had saved an eight-month-old
Yellow Lab mix puppy from an abusive home. But she couldn't keep him, she was
only allowed one dog in her apartment and she had her own dog. The puppy
would have to go to the Humane Society and be tied to the door the day after
Thanksgiving because she had an early morning class. Her landlord said she
would have to pay $100.00 more a month if she did not get rid of him by
Thanksgiving Day, and being a student she couldn't afford that.
This broke my heart to hear this. I told her to bring the puppy to me, but I
could make no promises in keeping him since it was up to Gizmo. Gizmo was
older and I wanted him to be happy. I told her I would help her find a home
if it didn't work out. Our new friend arrived on Thanksgiving Day at 2 pm. He
was skin and bones and it brought tears to my eyes to know someone could
practically starve him to death.
I knew within hours he was the boy for us. I named him Teddy B. Bear, Teddy
for short, and he is now an 82 pound healthy boy. Gizmo who is all of eleven pounds
runs with him and chases him to the window and follows his every move. Teddy
is a happy go lucky boy who loves to carry toys around and loves to roll
upside down on the grass. Teddy was a gift from the Angels on Thanksgiving
day and I think Dakota had a paw in that too. Each Thanksgiving I am reminded
of how blessed we were on that day.
Gizmo is now sixteen years old and I believe this little skinny puppy brought new
life into our home and gave my little guy a reason to run to the window
again, now they are a tag team. Gizmo gets mad if Teddy gets to the window
first!
Some people say, you saved Teddy from the shelter and possibly death, but I
say Teddy saved me and Gizmo.
