Basil,
you came to us as a puppy with ears so huge compared to the rest of
you that they dragged on the ground. Food was your great addiction - you
never met a food you didn't like. Whether it was a butter tart or an Easter
egg, you just couldn't resist sneaking it from the table and you taught us to
put plates well out of reach. You loved kiddie cones from McDonald's and got
very excited every time you saw the golden arches. I still think of you when
I make toast, you always had your toast too.
You never met a person you didn't like either, always confident that everyone
was your friend. You liked the snow and ice and you even went to the rink, we
have the photos! You loved play time at doggy day care and were as sociable
with other dogs as you were with people. You grew up with cats who taught you
how to wash your face with your paws and in turn you would groom them, when
they allowed of course.
Before your little friend was born, many people asked "What will you do about
the dog?" Well, nothing of course! You were our gentle giant who never
objected in any way to having your ears and tail pulled or being climbed
upon. In fact, you displayed remarkable patience and acted very proud of your
role as guardian to your little boy. We remember story time!
Going for a walk with you was always challenging. With that long, sensitive
nose you wanted to smell absolutely everything and you were so very strong,
arguing was pointless. But we would give anything to be dragged around again
by you.
Basil, you needed your people and couldn't stand to be alone. Up and down three
flights of stairs to find us many times a day was not a good thing. You went
to sleep this week after a probable ruptured disc and it broke our hearts.
Although you were 12 1/2 years old, you were still our puppy at heart. We
love you Basil. Handsome, loving, stubborn, loyal and gentle, you will be
forever in our hearts.
