This
is our sweet girl Balto. She goes by lots of names including
Princess, Baby Balto, Baltini, and Baltini-Lemon-Squeeny.
Balto joined our family one cold, snowy December soon after we had to
euthanize our American Eskimo, Jordan due to a severe illness that he
wouldn't recover from. We all loved having two dogs, so we knew we wanted
another one. When we found Balto, we knew right away that she was the one!
Although she was quite easy to potty train, none of us liked potty
training in the snow and cold. Maybe that's why she learned so quickly!
She is named after Balto the famous sled dog, although she is certainly
not a sled dog! She is a water dog! She loves being in the water, in a
boat or a canoe, or just going on a walk by the water! She also loves to
camp. We can't say the b-word (b-o-a-t) or the c-word (c-a-m-p-i-n-g)
unless we are ready to go. Say the magic word and she is out the door,
waiting at the car! She has learned our pre-camping and pre-boating
activities. Once she figures out what we are getting ready to do, she lays
by the door so we have to step over her to pack for camping or boating.
Although we always take her, she wants to make sure she doesn't miss out
on the fun!
She is a sweet, smart, independent, outdoor girl who loves to go on walks
and explore the neighborhood. Some evenings, if it is past our usual walk
time, she will sit by the door, near the hook where the leashes hang. When
we walk toward her, she looks from us, to the door, to the leashes, as if
to say, "Come on guys! Let's go." Then when she is sure we are going on a
walk, she does a little happy dance!
One summer, while canoeing on the Root River, she jumped out of the canoe
and swam toward shore. We quickly rowed toward shore to catch up with her.
When she reached shore, she found a nice spot to do her business! Then she
was ready to jump back in the canoe. She is such a good girl, she knew she
shouldn't potty in the canoe, so she took care of it herself!
She is a very cautious eater. Although we have never fed her anything bad,
she sniffs at any treat, gently takes it from us, then walks away to find
a spot to eat it! For her regular meals, we like to mix a little wet food
in with her dry food. She has let us know that she prefers the beef, not
the chicken or lamb! If we were to feed her the chicken or lamb, she won't
eat right away, sometimes letting the food sit in her bowl for quite a
while! So now she only gets beef!
We adore our Balto! Her sweet, happy, curious nature brings joy to our lives!
