For
eight years she has been a wonderful greeter at her very own Bed and
Breakfast inn in Waynesville, North Carolina, where she has acres of meadows to romp
about, the Inn at Iris Meadows on Love Lane. She greets
arriving guests and cheerfully escorts them to the guest entrance. She is
very lovable and has a playful nature and a great sense of humor but she is
serious about her job. She has a collection of kerchiefs for seasons and
holidays and wears them proudly. She was the poster dog for a local food
drive for Meals on Wheels food for pets. (See will work for food photo) She
loves to spend time with the innkeepers when they work in the inn gardens.
One of her very favorite activities is to ride in the car through the
picturesque Waynesville Main Street with innkeeper George, where she smiles
and greets both people and pets from her open window.
Scratch was rescued from a big green dumpster as a puppy, when she was heard
"Scratching" in her efforts to get out. Because she was a foundling, we do
not know her breed for certain, so we just say she's a Hovawart look-a-like.
Her regal bearing certainly belies her humble beginnings. We got her at one
year, from her former owner. When he got sick we took care of her, and when
he passed away we adopted her. When we took her to obedience classes, she was
the star of the class. She would learn every new command in one try, and the
teacher then began using her as the example for all the other dogs. And she
used her natural herding and protective instincts at class as well. Once
during doggie "play time" after lessons were over, one of the larger dogs, a
big Bulldog, decided he was going to go after a Jack Russell Terrier who had
been bugging him by barking incessantly. Scratch noticed the bigger dog
growling on his approach and immediately moved to block his way. There was no
barking, or any altercation, Scratch just let the bulldog know this wasn't
going to happen, and it all ended peacefully.
When we started the Inn, she was delighted to have a "job" of her own. A
natural "herder" she began to welcome guests when we opened. She greets them
in the parking area with a boisterous cheerful bark and with a toss of her
head she leads them to the entrance. She knows she is allowed only in the
innkeepers' living quarters so when she reaches the door with new arrivals,
she sits on the porch. She loves posing for photos with guests, too!
Sometimes she receives mail from guests.
