This
story is entitled "The Evolution of Jake." Jake came into my life on
October 18th, 2010. I first saw Jake when he was in his barren kennel. He
had no food, water or shelter. He was matted and smelled like feces. That
day, I was volunteering with a rescue group that was removing over 200
dogs from a puppymill. Jake was the puppymill's standard poodle stud. The
puppymill owner was mating Jake with Labrador females to produce the
trendy Labradoodles. I took one look at him and said "He is coming with
me!" That day I took six dogs home. They all found homes but Jake stayed with me!
That night I shaved his fur off. Most of his hair came off in one piece
(see picture.) His first vet exam showed he was about eight to ten years old and
had a heart arrhythmia (irregular heart beat.) I am a big supporter of
spaying/neutering but the vet and I were not willing to risk his life on
the surgery. Having lived most of his life in a kennel, it took about a
month to house break him.
Jake has the sweetest personality. He now spends his days playing with my
other two dogs and three cats. He has regular meals, goes to the dog park
and sleeps on the couch. He will be spoiled for the rest of his life. He
loves getting groomed. He is the happiest dog I have ever owned. My dream
dog was a standard poodle but I never thought he would come into my life
this way!
I hope Jake's story will encourage people to stop buying puppies from
irresponsible breeders. Please adopt from your local rescue group. If you
must have a purebred dog for show or a certain mix (labradoodles,
peke-a-poos, etc.), please go directly to the breeders and ask to see the
results of genetic health screenings and temperament testing., and ask to
see the pup's parents. Please spay/neuter all your pets! Jake and I thank you.
