We
certainly didn't plan to acquire him as part of our family. In fact I
purposely avoided him as he sat in that cage at the garden/pet store all
summer long. I had seen him from afar and knew I had to stay away or we'd end
up taking home a puppy instead of potting soil. Then the four month mark hit
and he didn't fit in his cage anymore. He was "marked down for sale" and
everybody kept calling him "clearance-dog". That once adorable fluff ball
pup had turned into a wild and awkward teenager that no one would dream of
setting loose in their home. I couldn't take it anymore. I heard myself ask
if I could meet him, despite my conscience telling me it was a horrible idea.
Next thing I know I'm signing papers with sweaty palms, picturing holes in my
walls and stains on my carpet, yet there was my husband and the puppy running
back and forth together each with the hugest smiles on their faces. I
squelched down my fears and inhibitions and signed that last line, there was
no going back now.
Of course the beginning was a little bumpy, but as with anything, you work at
it hard enough and it always pays off. Not even a year later and I can
proudly say that we have witnessed a beautiful transformation. Fender is
terribly smart, has actual manners (most of the time), loves to show off his
tricks, is a fantastic cheerer upper, the best workout buddy, and a fast
friend to all he meets. He is a constant reminder to me that we can make all
the plans in life we want, but it doesn't mean that's how things will go, yet
so often we are all the better for it!
