My
little dog's name is Angel, she is part Maltese and part Bichon, and
weighs nine pounds. I adopted her about four years ago because she had all the
qualities I wanted in a dog -and- showed up on the Internet at an adoption
center in the very same town in Northern Wisconsin where my daughter lived.
Last weekend we hosted a Hawaiian Luau party; so, I dressed her up as a
Hula-La Girl in a grass skirt. In 2010, we hosted a Halloween dress-up party;
then "Angel" was a "Devil." She is such a sweet little girl, and since I have
no grandchildren, I dote upon her. We used to live in Oakdale, Minnesota; but now
live in a new house on my grandparents' and parents' property on the edge of
Lake Pepin, near Maiden Rock, Wisconsin.
I have never had a dog with a "personality" ... she has one. She is a scared
tiny little dog one minute, and willing to take on a huge man if she feels he
might be a stranger coming to harm us; then, she can bark and really kick up
dirt with her back feet to appear tough. She mostly wants to sit on our laps,
be in the same room with us, sleep at the end of our bed, but when "she"
decides she wants independence she will pull away and there is no keeping her near!
When we sit down to dinner, she quickly goes to lay in her basket near the
table until our last bite; then, immediately wants to jump up on our laps. If
he finishes B4 me, and she is sitting on his lap near the table, she will sit
there and totally stare down the food in my hand, then star down me, back and
forth - trying to ESP me to give her a bite. She always wants to be near us,
but she knows when it is time for bed and simply goes there without us. She
normally sleeps on the bottom on the bed, but if she gets cold, she may
wiggle under the covers. Once I was totally shocked to open my eyes in the
morning to discover her head on the pillow next to me with her eyes wide open
watching me - just like a human laying there next to me.
The man of the house is her preference, but if she is napping with him on the
couch, I know that I can trump that by going to the "king" bed for a nap and
she'll be mine. When we leave to run errands or go to dinner, we often find
her sitting right there in the window or door hours later still watching for
us to return. She mostly sits around quietly, but occasionally she goes into
a tail spin and runs like the wind throughout the house. When we take her out
for a walk in summer, the minute we return to the yard, she finds a shaded
spot in the long grass and goes spread eagle flat for several minutes before
being ready to come in. Lucky we are now retired to allow her that luxury. We
can't imagine how we ever lived without her.
