Hollywood
is a 200-pound (91 kg) English Mastiff and is a fully certified therapy dog
through Therapy Dog International. He works an average of two to three days a week and
visits St. John's and Memorial hospitals in Springfield, Illinois as well as the
Mary Bryant Home for the Blind, nursing homes, Pause for Paws reading program
at the librarry and several other areas as well as an annual visit to the
Children's Grief Camp and the Illinois State Fair where he offers himself to
have his photo taken with you or your child for a nominal donation to the Humane Society.
He most recently spent the week of Thanksgiving including Thanksgiving day in
Washington, Illinois where he went around to visit the victims of the recent
tornados and helped to put smiles on their faces. He spent time at their
churches, schools and with first responders as well. He absolutely loves his
job which can be seen whenever his TDI collar and bandana are put on. He gets
uncontrollably excited and whines until he reaches the hospital where he is
always greeted by many of the staff who plan their days around his visits as
they also need an occasional hug.
Hollywood also insists that we dress himself (and us) in costume and visit
all his friends and patients on Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day
when many patients are alone and the most depressed.
When at home with his brother Goose, a three-year-old English Mastiff but only
125 pounds (57 kg), they both enjoy each others' company and make the best pets an owner
could possibly ask for.
