My
dog's formal name is NoVa's Black-Tie Boot Scootin' Boogie, but his call
name is just Scooter. Scooter came to me as a rescue dog in 2010. He's about
six years old now. He was a little out of control at the time, so I hired a
professional trainer and in just six sessions he was much more polite and
could do a loose-leash walk with no problem, and he would sit without being
told when we came to a stop.
Soon thereafter, he completed his AKC Canine Good Citizen test on the first
try. Then, in 2012 he became certified by Therapy Dogs, Inc. as a therapy
dog. He gives back to the community by making regular visits to nursing
homes, rehabilitation centers, veterans events, and joining his other therapy
dog pals at publicity events. He is very affectionate, travels with me and
stays in first class dog-friendly hotels, loves kids and is my Gentle Giant.
He has a little Sheltie sister who hopes to become a therapy dog herself
someday, following his example.
The AKC now grants titles to CGC dogs and to therapy dogs. Scooter is in the
process of getting both of those titles from the AKC as well. We love him a lot.
