My
Keala Bear is a three-year-old graduate of Pilot Dogs in Columbus Ohio.
The reason I work with Keala is I have multiple sclerosis and am legally blind. I have worked
with several dogs over the years and Keala is the best. She is very aware of
traffic and has saved me from being hit twice. The really interesting thing
about Keala is she knows I like photography and is a great helper. She and I
can be going somewhere and if she sees a creature, she tenses up a bit and I
can feel the harness vibrate. I will ask her to sit and she looks at the
animal. I shoot a few exposures and usually it's a squirrel or bunny. My
vision is poor and I would have missed them without her help.
Keala adores children and is very gentle. One day a friend with a
four-month-old was giving us a ride home. I told Keala to lie down beside the
car seat. A couple minutes later I looked back to check on her and she was
ever so carefully kissing his little hand. She is a very sweet girl. We have
two cats and she really gets along well with them. A stray was in our
neighborhood once and she was worried it was one of ours. Every time we saw
him. she did cat inventory. Keala has one odd quirk. She likes sleeping in
the tub. I always feel guilty if I need to soak in the middle of the night...
I have to kick her out. Guide Dogs are wonderful friends and I hope Keala
has a long working career with me.
