My
husband and I had been contemplating getting a puppy and when we saw an ad
our hearts melted when we saw the eight week-old puppies' pictures. We picked out
our puppy and stopped by the store on the way home because we hadn't been
prepared to actually get a dog so soon! My husband named her Nala after
another dog he had had when he was a child. She is a mix of German Shepherd & King Shepherd.
Nala was malnourished when we got her and she'd never been in a house with
air conditioning before. She absolutely loved being in the house and became
attached to the toy we gave her, sleeping with it every night. Unfortunately,
we didn't realize that she also had the parvovirus. After a month or so, she
started throwing up during the night. We took her to the vet who told us that
she had a very strong version of the virus but thought that she could make it
since we caught it so soon. They gave her several shots and sent us home with
an IV of liquids to give to her. Every day we gave her the IVs and she got
stronger and more irritated about it. It was a good sign because parvovirus
dogs become lethargic and die. The vet announced her well when we brought her
in the next week!
Nala's grown quite a bit since then, weighing around 45-50 pounds (22 kg) the last time
we checked. She loves being around people and loves to play fetch and
tug-of-war. She also is pretty well behaved around our two cats and likes to
play with them when they let her. Nala is a great watchdog and a fun
playmate; we are very glad to have her!
