is a typical Staffie. He can not stop playing, just pauses for a swim
to cool off and then he's back racing after his ball. He is also really
sensitive. Absolute hyper overload when you come home after being at work or
the shops even. He'll firstly pull himself all over the grass with his front
legs, dragging his back legs behind. Then it's greeting time and he kind of
goes mad trying to get your hand, licking crazily and softly biting the
fingers/hand. In two minutes the excitement is gone, and he goes and waits with
his Daisy where the balls are stored. I can do my own thing in this time,
they know what is coming so they wait patiently. He'll make the odd run to me
but after two licks is back waiting by the ball.
He can show off, too. At puppy training the trainer said she hadn't seen such
a smart staffie. At obedience I was unable to practice a stay routine with
him during the week. I got a bit nervous to do it in front of the other
trainers. He wasn't doing it for me in the five minutes of prep we had, but as
soon as showtime started, he just did everything 100%. It's been like that
with everything since.
He is also super sensitive, if other dogs get into a scuffle and I have to
raise my voice to cool things, he always assumes it's his fault and goes and
sits in the corner. I have to go sit with him and let him sit on my lap and
lick my face so that he knows it's okay. He also can not see anything except
a ball. Other dogs and people are not a distraction, his eyes are on me or
the ball. We have to limit him as he gets stiff from running. He doesn't know
when to stop and then can't walk properly the next day. So he only gets a few
minutes of ball chasing each session, after which it turns into a catch
session. If there is no ball an avocado pip will do. Otherwise he kind of
needs to be in contact with some living thing, be it us, Daisy or a stranger.
He likes the contact. At night he sneakily climbs onto the bed without us
knowing. you might think a 20kg (44 pounds) pooch isn't capable, but if the desire is
there to get up, he'll make it happen and in the morning we have the pooch
pushing us out from between us.
He isn't afraid of water, but sinks if he gets too deep. The front portion is
too dense I think, and it just wants to tip over frontwards.
We were limited by landlords to small-medium dog. So we choose our first dog
as a couple as a Staffie. I have always loved them, I honestly think they may
be the best breed. Haha. The look only a staffie can give you with those eyes
of pure love and emotion. Not to mention the staffie smile and all this in a
convenient sized package, the punches above its weight class in everything it does.
The best place to see more of him would be on instagram - rorphoto and
candschristie, he is pretty much well documented along with other pooches
that are in our lives, such as his beloved "sister" Daisy.
