This
is my fur baby, Sommer. Well, technically she belongs to my whole
family, but she really is 'mine'! She loves to come crawl up on my lap and
get some cuddles. She is joined in our home by six year old Jasmine, a black
Cocker. Because they are the same breed and so close in age, some might
assume that they are similar in terms of personality, but that couldn't be
further from the truth: Sommer is extremely excitable and outgoing, while
Jasmine is very calm and happy-go-lucky. We got them both from a lovely
breeder of Cocker Spaniels.
Sommer loves to hog all the attention in our household; no one can be paid
attention to without Sommer coming in and stealing the show. One of her
favorite things to do is to come and lay down in your arms until she gets her
tummy rubbed; if you stop, she will paw at your face until you start up
again! She really loves having the spotlight on her and everyone here calls
her the "little princess."
Sommer is a real trooper and very defiant, too; for example, once, when she
got into a wasps' nest and even though she'd been stung countless times, she
still managed to weakly wag her tail on the way to the vet's to show she
still had spunk. When we went to see her the first time at the breeder's, she
was clearly the boss there in the kennel: she was the only one who barked and
you could see her pushing her siblings to get to the food. We then realized
what we'd gotten ourselves into by adopting her!!
But even though Sommer is very extroverted, she has a very caring and
sensitive side too and it's easy to see why. I went through a period of
anxiety-induced depression and during the days I wouldn't want to get out of
bed, Sommer would come in bed with me and snuggle, or just lay by my feet.
She never failed to cheer me up with her shenanigans, even when the last
thing I wanted to do was smile. She helped me more than any human could, just
by being there and being a lovely little pup.
Sommer knows basic tricks (sit, come, give paw) but she also knows how to
properly eat from a spoon! Her favorite toy is a squeaky rainbow ball; she
chews them up so fast we have to keep getting new ones. Her favorite toy
prior to that was an orange humanoid ball we affectionally named her 'Babar'.
Sadly, that toy has gone the way of all of Sommer's past squeaky rainbow toys.
