Luna
was given her "forever home" fairly late in life. She was at rescue
facilities for three years, eventually living in a crate at her last
facility. She was overlooked again and again by potential adopters - possibly
because she has intact ears and tail and therefore "couldn't be a Doberman;"
or possibly because her shy personality couldn't compete with the
boisterousness of the dogs around her.
When I saw her, I fell in love with her ears and tail. I cannot understand
why people have them cropped off; they project her mood and tell me exactly
how she is feeling. She is gentle and friendly with all other creatures, cats
included. Watching her learn to trust and explore the world has been an
amazing experience; she had little knowledge of basic activities like going
for a walk. The first time she went hiking, she suddenly "got it" and went
running through the woods at top speed for hours on end. The first time she
saw snow, it was the absolute happiest I've ever seen her! We call her the
"snowbie" (snow + Dobie). She has also learned the joys of being sedentary
outdoors and basking in the sun on warm days. She can be a complete goober
and lacks good decision making skills, but it's all part of the fun. She
reminds me often that everyone deserves at least one real chance in life.
