Sweet
Dee is our miracle mutt. Born on a First Nations reservation in
Manitoba, she had no home and no owner for the first year and a half of her
life. She lived in a cement factory, and was frequently chased and abused by
the people who worked there. Nonetheless, she managed to keep herself alive,
even after she had the added demand of three puppies to raise. When she and
her puppies were rescued, she was underweight and found to have rocks in her
stomach that she had resorted to eating.
After some time recuperating, she and her puppies were flown to Vancouver by
a rescue organization and put up for adoption. Her puppies were adopted
almost immediately, but Sweet Dee languished in foster homes for the next
eight weeks. A large, black, and intimidating-looking dog with behavioral
problems was never likely to be quickly adopted, but her wait was a long one.
In late November of this year, we met Sweet Dee at the home of her foster,
and within fifteen minutes knew that we had found our girl. She was
excitable, too physical with newcomers, and poorly-behaved on leash, but
quickly proved herself to be fiendishly smart and to have a heart of gold.
Ten days later she moved in with us, and began getting used to her forever
home. It's now been nearly a month, and she is a dog transformed. She walks
politely on leash, comes when she is called, plays with other dogs, greets
newcomers politely, and no longer vocalizes inappropriately.
What she does do is follow us from room to room, curl up with us at night,
and accompany us as we go about our days. She has changed our lives, and we
are grateful every day for her.
