Introducing Sadie Mae or Sadie for short. We adopted Sadie about two months ago. She came from a rescue in Southern California called No Strays Left Behind. My family wanted a dog really bad, especially my father and younger brother and sister. I have a dog named Ravin, but Ravin is my daughter, not a family pet. The family really wanted a dog and we knew we wanted a rescue dog. There was no thinking about it. I used to foster dogs for a few years so I know how many good dogs that are out there that need good homes.
I would search on the computer and then find a dog I liked. Then I would show my mom and she would say okay, only to change her mind ten minutes later. Finally one day I found Sadie and I approached my mom. She said yes and then I contacted the rescue that night. The rescue owner, who was also the one fostering Sadie, said that she could drive her down to us the next day (she was 45 minutes away). That night when my little brother and dad got home (my sister is away at college), I showed them the picture of Sadie and they both liked her. I told them she was coming tomorrow and they both were excited. Then the morning came and low and behold my mom changed her mind yet again. I said you can't change your mind because they are scheduled to come. I said we might as well look at the dog and then the rescue lady, named Carrie, could just bring her back. My mother said yes and we waited until the time was here for us to finally meet Sadie ( it would just be my mom and I meeting her as my brother was at school and my dad was at work).
The knock at the door finally came and we were greeted my Sadie and Carrie. Sadie walked right into the house ignoring Ravin who was trying to smell every inch of her. We walked around the house and backyard showing Sadie all the different places. Then we sat down on the couch to talk. Sadie was brought to the rescue when she was eight weeks old. She was then adopted by a kind woman at the age of twelve weeks. She had a great life with that woman until one day that woman received terrible news. She was terminally ill. She knew that she had to find Sadie a perfect home but could not do so without the help of the rescue. The woman turned Sadie back to the same rescue she had gotten her from many months prior. She turned Sadie in to the rescue with her box full of toys plus her customized blanket and bed. You just knew how much that woman loved Sadie.
Sadie by then was ten months old and looking for a new family as her mom was not going to be able to take care of her anymore. Carrie took Sadie to adoption shows at Petsmart and Petco. Many people took her out of her cage to take her for a walk but no one "clicked" so to say. Then she came to our house and that "click" turned on. My mom and I told Carrie that we would love to adopt her so we signed all the appropriate documents and Carrie left. Sadie was sad to see Carrie go as she had been with Carrie for a whole month and had no idea where she was. She paced and whined for about a half an hour before we were able to distract her. I told her that she would eventually like it here and she hasn't looked back since.
Sadie absolutely adores Ravin. They play about half the day. Which is pretty good for Ravin seeing as she is coming up on seven. Sadie is going to keep Ravin young forever. When she's not playing she's sleeping. She loves to sleep on the couches ... no dog beds for this girl (even though she has a nice customized one)! Oh, I forgot to mention that she loves to run. You can't tire this girl out, but of course that's because I think she has Saluki in her. Both my parents are avid runners and they take Sadie on five- to six-mile runs a couple of times a week. She also accompanies Ravin during our nighttime walks. Usually it's my dad and brother or my dad and mother doing the walking. But lots of times it's just my dad walking both dogs at the same time. At night Sadie sleeps in my brother's bed, keeping him nice and safe from anything that goes bump in the night.
Even though we feel like we "stole" her from her last owner, we are really happy Sadie is in our lives. By the way, in the last picture, Sadie snuck into my closet and stole her Christmas present that was from Santa for her stocking. I took a picture of her with the new toy. She is a great dog and fits into our family perfectly. Please give rescue dogs a chance when you're looking to add another dog to your family. You never know, you may just find that perfect fit.
