I was driving on a Kentucky interstate headed to Lexington to judge a horse show. As I came over the crest of a hill I saw what I thought was a squirrel in the middle of the road. As I got closer I realized the squirrel was a little dog which was running hellbent for leather down the middle of the interstate highway. Behind me were several semi trucks going over 70 miles an hour. I put my hazard lights on and started pumping my brakes, slowed down and came to a dead stop in the middle of the interstate. I got out of my car which was parked about 30 feet from where this little dog was trying to jump over the barrier to a river below. I stood there wondering if indeed I was going to chase the dog into greater harm. Very quickly I made the decision to open the passenger side door and say, "Little dog, if you want to live another day, you get in this car right now!" And it did.
I took the dog to a local humane society to have it checked for an ID chip; none. Then I gave them my information to post onto local websites, but no one ever called. The dog came back to Indiana with me. By the way, when the dog first jumped in the car I thought I saw an indication that it was a little boy dog. Thus I started calling it Sam. Shortly thereafter however it was brought to my attention that the little boy was actually a pregnant little girl dog. I just never changed the name.
When Sam came back to Indiana, she was minus her fleas and ticks but in the motherly way. My local vet, however, informed me two days later that she was having a false pregnancy. Who knew? I didn't need another dog, but my other dog, Annie M, thinks Sam is the best toy I've ever brought home. We absolutely adore her!
