This dog is a trickster. Here is a partial list (shortened because there are not enough characters available to detail all of his misdeeds. We ADORE him!
Some of his antics so far include
- opens the doors to our house to let himself in (and out)
- stole our Christmas present from the porch and played with it for three weeks before I realized what it was
- goes up to our neighbor's house, invites himself in, greets everyone and leaves.
- climbs up on the dining room table (and no, this is not permitted.)
- knows he is not supposed to be on his favorite couch so only puts his rear on it so it doesn't count (photo attached.)
Baxter is my second Airedale; I should have learned! This breed is by nature, very inquisitive and Baxter has that trait in spades. I can't put a thing down without him going to investigate what it is and decide whether or not it's worth picking up and running away with. Independence is his middle name, what that means is that he is perfectly capable of doing what ever you ask him to do, but that doesn't mean he is going to do it; he will if he feels like it.
That said, this dog doesn't have a mean bone in his body. He loves every dog and person that he meets. He loves to snuggle, including getting on my lap (at 75 lbs it's quite a load) or draping himself over my lap while I'm in a chair. If you show him even a little affection, he's yours forever. His only nemesis in life are the rabbits who are all over our property. Running after them is the best thing in his life. Luckily, he never catches anything but I must say he gets closer all the time and has learned their tricks which are to dodge and weave.
We have an older standard poodle who he outweighs by about 40 lbs; she tells him what to do and when. I can honestly say that I have never had a dog with more personality; none of those people-pleasing breeds for us. He's a challenge but we love him to pieces.
