While I know every dog is spectacular and special to their families, including my three dogs, I wanted to share my boy. He is a gorgeous chocolate Labrador named Kona. We adopted him from the local pound after losing our previous black Labrador to old age and wanted to give a new dog a home. He's been such a great dog and well mannered from the start that it was unfathomable that someone would abandon him; their loss, as he is such a fantastic soul and joy of our life. He has never been mean to any other animal, loves to meet other dogs, and in fact is afraid of cats.
When we first adopted him he was afraid to bark and had such sadness in his eyes. After a while he grew into his own and realized he was loved and had a forever home. That's when he learned to bark and has never quit! He loves running, swimming, throwing himself on anything smelly, puddle jumping, and most of all chasing squirrels. He has always been my protector and my running dog: at times up to 10 miles, with a thirst for more. He has been a "papa" to our other two younger Labs raising them as pups, even though they are not technically his. He is the glue to my affectionately coined "Lab pack." I never hadve to worry about my safety when he is with me, and he is so happy that it exudes from his face when out running anywhere.
Last month we fortunately were able to take him to the beach for a week. He loves running into the ocean, chasing pigeons, and finding anything dead to rub on ... He is so excited that he literally barks at the sun or anyone else around. He saw horses walking on the beach for the first time, and I could see his perplexion ... are those really big dogs???
Sadly, I just found out this will be his last beach trip as he was diagnosed with cancer and has less then a month to live, and my heart is breaking. So I wanted to share him with the world because he is such a treasure. People stop me to say what a gorgeous dog and good boy. He is friendly, but very intense. You definitely have his full attention when you meet him. He has an amazing heart and his deep brown eyes melt you and warm you at the same time.
He is an amazing dog!
