First, Benny the Beagle wants you to know he is definitely, 100% a beagle. All beagle, all the time. We don't know for sure how old he is, maybe three or four years old.
Though abandoned by his owner in the rural south as a proverbial dog who won't hunt, Benny is a brave hunting hound. Yes, he's afraid of the dark, cannot pick up the scent of the squirrel crouching next to him, is afraid of stairs, and his favorite activity is cuddling up in his LL Bean easy chair perch. But remember, it is not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.
When Benny's current owner was suddenly dumped by his long-time girlfriend who ran off with an Israeli businessman she met online, his current owner knew it was time for a companion who might still run away, but not with anyone on the internet. And so, using the Internet of course, he found Benny on a beagle rescue group's website.
Benny was spared from doggy death row after being found starving in the Blue Ridge mountains of southern Virginia. Sadly, he was unmanageable in his foster home, and they ended up having to chain him to a stake outdoors. Hmm ... Not a promising adoptee. But Benny's new owner is a soldier, and in the Army we leave no one behind. And so it was meant to be.
A year later Benny has calmed down considerably and has become an (almost) gentleman dog. Anyone who does not think dogs can have hearts of gold should meet Benny - he will prove you wrong. And will be your friend for life if you have a treat for him.
