He is my first dog and he has helped me through some tough times since I got him as a pup four years ago. Shortly before I got him I was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder with psychosis (I hear voices, see things that aren't there, and sometimes believe strange/ridiculous things). I was in a psychiatric hospital three times in the first year and Gatsby was a huge motivation for me to get better so I could get home to him. During my first admission I was allowed to leave for a couple of hours just to take him to puppy training and it made things so much more bearable receiving photo messages from my parents of Gatsby waiting for me at home.
Thankfully my health has improved in the last year or so and I have been taking dog-related online courses, shadowing dog trainers, and recently got a part-time job as a dog handler at a dog day care. Additionally I am an artist specialising in dog portraits. I wouldn't have been motivated to do any of this without Gatsby. He can be a stubborn, grumpy old man of a dog, but I love him to bits.
