I found Lilly at the pound. She had been so badly abused that she was thought to be impossible to re-socialize by the staff. After attempting to work with her for several weeks, they put her on the "to be euthanized" list. I happened upon her 12 hours before she was to be killed. She trembled constantly, and wouldn't let me near her while we were in the "get acquainted" pen.
I convinced the staff to let me adopt her. I brought her home, and she immediately hid under my bed, and that's where she stayed for a month. I put her food and water under the bed, and lined the carpet with piddle pads. Every day I would pull her out from underneath, and just hold her closely and talk to her in a soft, quiet voice. I did this every day, several times a day.
Eventually, over the course of a few months, she began to trust me. I then continued to work with her for a solid year. Since those days, she has made a complete turn-around. She has learned to trust people, and is now super friendly with everyone she meets. She is the sweetest, most affectionate dog I've ever owned, and she has become my very best friend!
