Our American Akita rescue dog Aya (short for Ayama - Flower - in Japanese) came into our family 12 years ago. She is the most loyal, brave, and protecting dog one could ever imagine. She has gotten our family through so many tough situations. She was with my son in Northern California while he went to Law School; she supported him through that grueling period and helped him pass the bar exam. She is very protective of our family. Once when we were out someone tried to break into our house (the lock was jiggled), but Aya scared them off. Whenever someone is upset, Aya just comes to their side and gives them that knowing snuggle.
She does so many cute things, mainly concerning food. Once I made a casserole for a potluck and she managed to eat the whole thing when I left the room. But I didn't care because she gave me the most adorable look when I realized what she had done (she must have been very hungry anyway). She hovers around me in the kitchen, discreetly waiting for that delicious scrap.
Aya loved to hike in her prime, and run in the grass. She hates baths, but after she takes one and dries off she is so fluffy and sweet.
The best part about Aya is that she has made me into a total dog lover. I have always been a cat person, and fairly neutral towards dogs. But Aya has made me see the charms of dogs as well - she has completely won me over to wagging tails, wet noses, cute poses and tricks, and walks in the neighborhood. I still love cats just as much though.
She is old now, and while we know she won't be with us much longer, she will always be in our hearts.
