Rusty was a birthday gift I received almost 13 years ago that has brought my family great joy and laughter. When I was taken to the shelter to pick a dog for my birthday there was something special about him that made him stand out from the other dogs the first time I saw him. Perhaps it was his eyes or his rust colored coat but I knew he was the one for me and our lives have never been the same since. He will be turning 13 next month.
As I reflect on our past I realize how long he has been with us and that he has shared in our joy, laughter, frustrations and sorrows. I've never seen a dog that expresses himself the way Rusty has over the years. We were always able to tell when he was happy, sad, annoyed, exasperated, concerned or in the mood to play.
Those eyes and face of his display emotion I'd have never thought possible and has caused a tumult of laughter even when we're trying to be stern. It's a weapon in his arsenal and he knows it; he uses it to his every advantage and it only makes us love him more.
I've watched him grow from the expensive furniture/leather shoe eating, queasy when car riding, bath evading, garbage diving pup into this white bearded furniture lounging, family caretaking, can't go driving without him, old dog who plays and loves hard.
Thirteen years seem to have flown by and I know it's a bit greedy but my heart hopes for many more. We've taken care of him and I've watched him look after each and every one of us when we are sick. Sometimes I wonder how we managed to be blessed with such an unusual character. I remember that day we first met and I know now that wide eyed pup was waiting there just for us as much as we were waiting for him.
