This is our little fluff ball, Lily. She will be turning ten years old on January 19th, and we can't quite believe it! Lily is a small dog (six pounds, 11 oz., to be exact) who has a heart the size of Texas. We have been volunteers with Therapy Dogs International for seven plus years now, having logged in well over one thousand hours of visiting people in nursing homes, hospitals, cancer centers, mental health facilities, college campuses, libraries and elementary schools. While this is a non-paying job, the rewards are off the charts! Lily loves EVERYONE, and will stand up on her hind legs and wave at people approaching us as if to say "I can't wait to meet you!" (And if I had a dollar for every "high five" she's given, I'd be a millionaire by now.)
She is quite the personality - we raised her as a tomboy (like her mom, who drives a truck and loves football) big dog, not a princess. Call her a Toy Golden Retriever! She loves a good game of tug-of-war, and happily retrieves balls, is an avowed nudist, abhorring any kind of clothing or coat. She likes cashews but not pecans, Cheetos but not potato chips, cheddar cheese but not swiss. And she loves chicken above all else, in any way, shape, or form. With that said, we have trouble getting her to eat enough, and this irony is not lost on the residents of the Eating Disorders Unit at our local hospital. They feel a special kinship with this little dog - she was even featured in one of their newsletters! A number of kids we have visited have been inspired to draw pictures of her, and I enclose one of those. I think it really captures her bright, happy, loving spirit.
While she loves everyone she meets, she has a special place in her heart for my husband - she adores him! The photo of the two of them was taken very recently - you might say she's close to his heart too . . .
