My dog's registered name is "Lorrin's Silver Guardian," but I just call her Silver. Silver is a two year old female German Shepherd. Silver lives with her "Momma" and her brothers and sisters (three other dogs, five cats and two Ferrets) in South Holland, Illinois!
Silver is a wonderful dog...I got her when she was two months old from a local breeder. I actually wanted the male pup, but Silver chose me right away and would not give up until I made it clear I was taking her. I couldn't refuse her big brown eyes and floppy ears! Silver saved me in a way, I got her when my dad was going through major treatment for Lymphoma. My parents were actually in Boston at the time I got Silver, so she was a surprise to everyone. Going through the hard times with my Dad being very ill, Silver saved me from losing control. She kept my feet on the ground and at times when I didn't think I could face reality, she was always there to keep me going. Silver helped distract me from the things I didn't want to be around, she kept me busy!
Even from day one, I noticed something very special about Silver. Silver was always very eager to learn, nothing was too hard! Silver and I have the strongest bond (as most people who own German Shepherds are familiar with), this is probably because of all of the training we went through. I decided to do something different with Silver when I chose to train her in German. She learned all of the basic commands, on and off leash. I realized I had a talented dog soon after she mastered all of that within a few weeks; so, I signed her up for Schutzhund classes. Later Silver and I quit that training and soon she will be starting a mixture of Protection and Agility training. Eventually I would also like to get her into Search and Rescue. For most dogs, this would be a lot, but nothing is ever too much for my girl! Silver spends her days playing with her brothers and sister (2 Black Labs and a Chinese Shar-Pei/Pittbull mix)...She also likes to chase her cats and pester her ferrets. However, she enjoys nothing more than her job ... being my guardian. Even when Silver and I go to sleep she will lay by the door and growl at everyone that walks by (warning them that we're trying to sleep so don't come in!), she'll do that for about 20 mintues and then join me in bed and go to sleep!
This past March we actually lost my dad to Graft vs. Host Disease ... and I know for a fact if I didn't have Silver through all of that, that I wouldn't have much of a future right now. Silver has taught me many things, and she continues to teach me more day after day. After many offers I've had on selling Silver, everyone should know that no money can replace the bond I have with Silver, it is and always will be cherished.
