Athena was a goddess.
Athena passed over the rainbow bridge last December fifth. I still miss her terribly because she was the most beautiful dog inside and out. (We have Helen and Sophie now.) But today is Athena's day.
Athena was a black labrador retriever whose mother lived right down the street. She was with us since she was a tiny puppy. She loved to swim, and fish, and go for a ride. She loved the beach! Once when I tried to catch and release a fish, I ended up keeping it. After trying to release it three times and Athena kept bringing it back, I finally told her "okay girl" we'll take it.
At the lake one day I spied two mountain lions getting a drink of water. They retreated into the woods. Shortly after that Athena started a low growl and kept eyeing a patch of trees. We packed up and skidaddled. I never worried about fishing alone when Athena was with me.
She was smart too! Once when she wanted a bone that Helen had; she went and got a squeaky ball and she tried to trade it for the bone. Helen didn't bite. So Athena tried a stuffed toy. She shook it in front of Helen. But Helen, after considering the new toy, still didn't go for it. Then Athena brought out the big guns! Athena pulled the squeaky snake out. She shook that snake in front of Helen too, and Helen couldn't resist. Helen grabbed the snake and Athena snached the bone! That was one smart dog.
I miss her every day. I hope she is waiting for me. Like they say: if there are no dogs on heaven, I want to go where they are! We love you Athena; today and always.
