SMabel is a three-year-old Great Pyrenees. I rescued her when she was just a year old, and she's been my darling "dog daughter", ever since. Mabel came into my life after the loss of my very first dog, and I never believed I could love another as strongly. I was wrong. Mabel touched my heart the first time I heard her story. Her foster mom told me that Mabel was found wandering around with her tail slashed and cut up. Consequently, the vet had to amputate it. She had just gotten her stitches removed and was very thin, when I met her for the first time. But, it didn't stop her from allowing me to pet her, or walk her around on her leash. I felt an instant fondness for her, and it has grown in abundance over the last three years.
Mabel is a very spoiled and happy pup now. I tell her she's very unique, since she's tailless, and she shakes her bottom happily in response. Mabel LOVES her morning walks. She's very happy and protective as we go, since she considers the whole neighborhood, her territory. Mabel also loves to be in her backyard, protecting it from squirrels, other dogs walking beside the fence, and big, loud trucks. She barks loudly at all three to let them know who is in charge. She likes to take her toys into the yard too, and constantly pounces on them when she's feeling frisky. She also loves it when I throw her toys for her. She's great at retrieving them, but giving them back is another story.
Mabel is a sweetheart and a cuddle bug too. She loves to get on the couch, next to me, and put her head on my leg. She knows this will coax me into patting and rubbing her tummy. She likes lots of petting, and especially likes her neck massaged. At bedtime, she's happy to curl up beside me and nudge me with her nose. This guarantees more patting.
Mabel will be four years old in a month, and I'm thankful every day that I decided to rescue another dog. The first night that she was with me I sang her the song, "You Are my Sunshine", and she is! I sing it to her regularly to remind her how special she is to me. Mabel is my sunshine. She brings me daily joyful light on the darkest days, and never ceases to bring a smile to my face.
