I had always heard that rescued dogs somehow understood that they were rescued and were very grateful dogs because of this. I didn't believe it. Then I got my Lacey girl. I've had dogs for all of my life, and I'm here to tell you that it's absolutely true.
I got Lacey from a rescue group when she was almost three years old. She was very timid. She joined me and my three Japanese Chin pups; and every single day with us she began to blossom more and more. Every day for the 11+ years that I was privileged to have her, she moved closer and closer to understanding that she now had a family, a pack where she fit in, was loved, protected and showered with attention … and given great food!
Lacey passed away from old age in my arms five years ago. She was my best friend and taught me so much. I've since gotten two other pups after Lacey, both rescues. I will only have rescues now. As they say, "until there are none, rescue one." The other saying; "Who rescued who?" is absolutely true. She will always be my extra special Lacey girl because she was my first rescue. I'm so grateful that this sweet little creature and I found each other!
