Earl was our friend. He was a couch potato who was afraid of so many things, yet he was happy with us. He loved his bed, his yard, his bones, and getting his teeth brushed. When he was younger, he would endlessly chase squirrels and run around the yard at full-speed. Earl was a beautiful dog with such a thick fur coat. I loved giving him big hugs and seeing his face in the hallway as he'd cautiously come out to see us for breakfast and dinner. He loved getting "ear twisties" where we'd spin his ears around our fingers and he'd turn to mush. He wasn't usually affectionate, but that made those times all the more special when he would seek us out to lean against us or put his face in our lap.
Earl was special because he needed our love and protection in an indifferent world, and my family and I did everything we could to create a space for him to be content. We were so lucky to be able to adopt him and give him a new life. Through his long life I know that he found happiness with us, and I can't find the words to describe how much we'll miss him.
Goodbye Earl. We love you so much.
