Siouxie, the Dog of the Day
Name: Siouxie
Age: Deceased, Ten years, eight months old
Gender: Female Breed: Siberian Husky
Home: Walnut, California, USA

Siouxsie found me at a local animal shelter. She was stuck in a tiny kennel and her number had a note attached to it stating she was "aggressive to other animals." I asked the front desk about this and learned she'd actually been adopted out through the same shelter before but she'd made a meal out of her previous owner's chickens. With no waiting period for reclamation she was at risk for being euthanized. I took her home that same day for $50, she hopped into my car like she owned it and from that day I realized she had adopted me.

We spent almost eight years together full of husky talks, husky walks, husky escapes, and husky sheds. She was very smart and learned how to open doors quickly. Once she escaped, I found her several blocks away on foot and with no leash I opted to carry her to the nearest house with a telephone. When the homeowner came to the door she had a minor meltdown thinking my dog was a present from her boyfriend! Siouxsie was also headstrong, she could pick up tricks in a snap however getting her to want to perform them wasn't easy. Her palate was known to favor certain foods over others and she was not above fasting in an attempt to get tastier treats. At some point she developed a liking for tropical fruits and didn't seem to mind the combination of sweetness with salmon. A few years later we introduced her buddy Boomerang and she quickly assumed the big sister role, something she never let him forget. Siouxsie was a queen and somewhat of a diva, she and Boomerang even made it into a book dedicated to an actor known for his love of "comedy dogs." Often she argued with my pocket Mr. T, absolutely unconcerned that Mr. T did not want to be made mad. Siouxsie saw the birth of my nephew whom she met with husky kisses once he was old and big enough not to be bowled over. She became very popular with friends on social media due to her expressive lady face.

On April 19, 2013 Siouxsie lost a fight with cancer. Although in pain from her body falling behind her spirit, she kept smiling and even wagged making friends with the staff around her. The photo of her with a blue lipstick print on her muzzle was taken only four days before she passed. Her last hours were shared with her new friends and her old family, seeing to it that her battle ended painlessly and without feeling defeat. Siouxsie, you will always be missed, there's no other dog who could take your crown.
