Canela, the Dog of the Day
Name: Canela
Age: Deceased, Eleven months old
Gender: Female Breed: Dog
Home: Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Canada

It's been over a year since I met a dog that changed my life for the better. She was a little angel and she showed me so much hope and how to grow and just enjoy life for what it is.

This is Canela. She was a rescue dog from the streets of Mexico. My parents and I found her when she was only two to three months old on death's door in November of 2012. She had almost everything wrong with her; distemper, mange and worms to name a few. We were on a drive across the small island of Cozumel when we found her with a man who made signs. We thought she didn't look to well and it was wearing on our minds all day and late into the night. At 11 pm we got up and made the trip back to her. As it was late there were no vet offices open and without one, we knew she wouldn't make it through the night. To our luck our friends knew the local vet and made a call and took her in. The vet said it was best to put her down. (This was heart-breaking for us as we are animal lovers). We said, "No," and we said we would do anything to help this little angel.

With care, she started to show improvement late November 2012, We were then able to bring her back to our casa down in Mexico by early December. She gained a lot of weight in the five months she was there. She was finally out of the woods (we were ecstatic that she was well on the road to recovery). In May, Canela and myself made the journey up to Canada first a ferry from Cozumel to Playa Del Carmen, then a bus to Cancun, then came our two flights she managed those very well. Finally she was home after seven months. Over June she gained more weight and filled out into a gorgeous dog full of life and exuberance, getting joy out of being alive.

But sadly she developed a habit of chasing cars, and that, we could not break her of. Later in the summer she was hit by a car, and passed away. I thought my world was coming crashing down. I developed a case of post traumatic stress disorder I felt unsafe and that everything was going to be ripped away from me.

But on a lighter note, I'll never forget her for she showed me: no matter what gets you down, you can recover. You can maybe even forget the bad in your past. I thought I would share this with all of you, maybe it'll help you think about life in a new way. And never to take the small things for granted. I will always love sweet Canela.
