Kyzack Mawdsley, the Dog of the Day
Name: Kyzack Mawdsley
Age: Three years old
Gender: Male Breed: Alaskan Malamute
Home: England, UK

Kyzack alerted me that my next door neighbour had fallen in her yard. She is 86. Eventually alerted the paramedic and fire rescue to gain access. I was in my study and he kept coming in and barking. I eventually went outside to the fence, and heard her calling out very faintly. She was hurt quite badly, but I am glad to say she is safe now. Kyzack now pops in now and then to visit her on his walks. I am so proud of him, and he loves her to bits.

Ky is very much a Malamute, he's very strong willed, 'talks' more than most dogs, and is very routine orientated. For example, when I wake him in the morning and put on the morning coffee, the first thing he does is shoot upstairs to go say 'good-morning' to Alison. He then simply crashes out on the bed until she goes to work. I work from home so I have him lying next to my desk.

He usually has three to five walks a day. It is strange, on the dot at 11 he gets up and starts nudging me for his 11am walk. He is exceptionally tactile, for example, when we come home from being out we have this ridiculous routine/ritual. When we get home, we open the kitchen door, one of us sits on the stairs to love his ears (he loves a good scrunch), whilst the other person will give him a quick 'massage' on his chest. He has become to expect this - maybe I have made a 'rod for my own back,' but it is really nice to get a warm welcome home.

Kyzack has his own vocabulary. If I say 'sit' he responds by standing on his back legs. He says the word "water" when he wants a drink and knows where the leads, jackets and gloves are when it's walk time. He goes and stares at them!

Like many dogs ... he has a toy box. Often, while we are watching TV, he will bring one of his toys to play with (usually a soft toy). I normally say, "No, I am watching TV now," which he interprets as "let me go and get another toy, maybe he will play with me then" and off he goes to get something else.

I am a photographer, and like most we have bags, cameras, and studio equipment all over the place. Over the years, as a puppy Ky has has done the normal puppy things, like being 'inquisitively destructive' and 'eating' things he should not have. But even though he has access to everywhere in the house, he has never even thought of going near my stuff - he just simply respects it!!!! Hmmm ... maybe I am inviting trouble by saying this? He knows what a camera is, and gives you that 'stare-down-the-barrel' look when you point a lens at him.

Ky's just a loveable hunk. He knows his place in the pack, though he sometimes 'tries' to take over as Mals do. He is very sociable with other dogs, but then also a bit protective as well. His tail is always "wagging to the right" and generally happy, but he goes into 'wolf' mode (when his ears point and he puts his chest out) when threatened.

I included one photo of his training day ... in other words ... "You see those ducks? Don't eat them". We love him!
