All
my life I had wanted an Irish Wolfhound, and when a local Great Dane
rescue person found this beauty in Tijuana, dirty and sad, in a backyard, she
knew she had to rescue her for a better life. Fiona had never been in a house
and knew nothing other than cement and dirt. She had two litters but this
breed is not known in Mexico, so the profit was not forthcoming for the owner
and he easily gave her up to the rescuer for a few dollars.
I went to the rescuer's house "just to see" her, as I already had five dogs,
but as soon as she walked over to me, with that big head at waist height, I
knew she needed to come home with me. It took weeks for her tail to come out
from between her legs, and about eight months for her to even wag her tail with
joy, which she now does.
She is friendly to everyone and not in the least intimidating, even to small
children, being large ant mellow rather than rambunctious. She goes up to
everyone she meets and greets them, with a lean against their legs, standing
quietly. She is fearful of loud noises and if you walk near her carrying a
large object, she removes herself to another room. She is now almost three
and we have had her for two years and the idea of this gentle giant not being
a part of our lives is inconceivable. She completes our family of five small
dogs with grace and elegance, but a touch of the clown, as well. She is her
own creature and goes at her own pace, but never does anything wrong, so we
are content to let her be just who she is.
She is just so darned unique and hard to describe. She does nothing but be
herself and I wondered at the beginning if she only knew Spanish and that was
why she was somewhat unresponsive. But again, she never does a wrong, bad or
mean thing, so it is a small thing. Let the little terriers do flips, catch
frisbees, etc. Fiona is just content to be loved.
