Abby the German Shorthaired Pointer, the Dog of the Day
Name: Abby
Age: Four years old
Gender: Female Breed: German Shorthaired Pointer
Home: Espoo, Finland

Abby is my first dog. We got her with my mother as a pointer for hunting birds and hare. She was brought home from Romania from a breeder.

We loved her right away. She has the most amazing nose, she can find wounded animals, lost pets or people. She has an amazing hunting drive and has been my companion in the woods every fall now, and she will work from dawn to dusk if you let her . She loves to play fetch, run and swim, (always taking at least a 2-meter leap into the ocean).

You'll find her lounging out in the sunniest spot in summer, enjoying the heat more than any of us can, or rolling in the mud, and looking genuinely offended that we make her take a shower afterward. She has also Masters begging. She will sit up on her haunches, place her paw and chin on your lap, and look at you with the most adorable brown eyes you'll ever see. During any down time she'll curl up next to me for a nap, and she makes me feel the luckiest person alive.

But what makes her that much more special is how much of a fighter and how loving she is. I was diagnosed with PTSD and Social Anxiety a year ago and I don't think i would be here without her. I'm no longer afraid of walking outside alone when I'm with her, because she will protect me with all she's got. And when I have a panic attack she will calmly curl up besides me and stay until i'm back to my normal self again.

Her time on this earth is Limited though. She was diagnosed with genetic deterioration of the joints three years ago, and now has arthritis from her spine to her hind legs. The doctors said she wouldn't last a year. She cant jump as much anymore, or run as long, but the medicationss keep the pain away. So she keeps living life like there's no tomorow and figthing on, and who knows, maybe she'll make it to ten.

Time alive is limited for everyone, but she makes every minute count, and although my family has other dogs now, she will always be a one-of-a-kind dog, and I am forever greatful to have her.
