Rylee
was adopted back in 2010, at an overrun shelter in Texas. She had the
most fleas I had ever seen on a dog; sores all over, and she was absolutely
filthy with flea dirt. She was obviously miserable. We believe she is a
German Shepherd/Flatcoated Retriever mix - that's our best guess, anyway!
When we first met her, she was huddled in the back of her small cage (which
wasn't even tall enough for her to stand up comfortably in) but something
drew me to her. When we brought her out to interact with her more, she simply
sat beside me with sad eyes, pawing my arm gently. I didn't go there set on
adopting a shy dog, but how was I to say no?
We took her home, groomed her, fattened her up, played with her - and quite
simply loved her. She soon came out of her shell a bit and of course, looked
a lot better.
Now, nearly four years later, she is a completely different dog. She isn't
shy one bit; though I can still see a bit of that fear in her through her
territorial behavior and uneasiness with strangers. Still, she's proven to be
a great dog and by far the smartest I've ever owned, quickly learning any
trick thrown at her. She's now up to over twenty tricks, and while she can be
"sassy" and sometimes stubborn, she's much loved.
