For
my 18th birthday, I wanted nothing more than a puppy. I wanted one that
was small, that I could cuddle all the time. So my mom and I went to our
local shelter to pick a baby out. When we got there, there were so many to
choose from. (If I had my way, I would have left that day with every single
one.) I went from cage to cage, making baby noises and coos at each dog. Some
would wag their tails, while a couple growled ... but then I got to his cage.
I remember very clearly all he had was a bowl of water and a cheap little
squeaky toy. He was whining, but not a normal dog whine. It was almost like
an infants cry. He just seemed so very sad. It was breaking my heart. So my
mom and I looked at each other, we knew ... it had to be him.
He was a medium build, the exact opposite of what we went in there for, but
we just knew. He had picked us. So we looked on his adoption clip board, and
there were no names, not one. We figured maybe he was new, just in that day,
because who couldn't want that adorable face, those pound puppy eyes? So we
asked the lady running to kennel, and she told us he had been there for a
while and he was scheduled to be put down the next day. Nope! We jotted our
names down on the list, and before we could finish she told us we could take
him that day. He instantly became the biggest bed hog, but the greatest
cuddler and now I can't sleep without his gentle snores. I love him more than I can explain.
Seven years later and he still hates that squeaky toy, which they sent home
with him, and he makes that baby-like whine every single time he is happy.
