I
decided to get another golden baby after losing my ten-year-old golden
retriever named Lucky. Lucky holds a special place in my heart. He was loyal,
brave, kind and my best friend. He helped me through very rough times and was
there for me when I went through my most memorable moments. Sadly, he was
never very healthy as a result of being from a puppy mill, and as he got
older he only got worse until I had to say goodbye to him.
Months went by until I decided it was time to welcome a new baby into my
life. I decided to stick with the breed as I've grown up around many
different breeds and goldens just have everything I look for in a dog. I
desperately wanted to adopt one, as all of my pets are rescues and I wanted
to do the same with a new dog. However, the local shelters didn't have any
goldens and the one shelter that did have goldens made it impossible to adopt
one. So I did my research and refused to buy one from a pet store despite my
mom constantly trying to go that route.
A friend helped me look for a very reputable breeder and so that was the
route I took. After finally picking a breeder, I placed a deposit on a litter
to be born in late July. I had to wait two months to see how many would be
born. I was third in line for a male, so I was super nervous! Finally on July
29, she gave birth to four males and three girls. Four males! I cried with
joy and relief. During the months spent waiting, I was getting everything
ready for him. Toys, brushes, beds, puppypads, everything. Before he was
born, I had already decided on the name Elliot. There was no real reason
behind the name. It was just the name that immediately came to mind when I
was thinking of names. And well, somehow it just stuck.
Once the puppies turned eight weeks, I went to go pick who would be known as
Elliot. The trip was very long. Very very long. But we finally arrived. The
first two boys were already chosen before I got there, so there were two
little baby boys left. After sitting with them for a good long while, I
choose the one that I felt the most connection to. And so Elliot, weighing fifteen
pounds (6.8kg), was taken back to our car, given his first toy, and sat next to me in
the back seat. We took him to the pet store for the last of his supplies
which was a collar, harness and leash. Afterwards we took him straight home
where he settled in immediately with all of my other pets. One of my cats,
Zack, loves to babysit puppies and made fast friends with Elliot.
Elliot is very friendly and gets along well with other animals and people. He
loves to play outside. He's super quick with his obedience training and is
surprisingly not a heavy chewer. The only thing he's eaten was my PS2 cable.
;~; I was expecting it since I raised a golden baby way back when. But he was
much worse. Ha ha. He even went as far as eating some of my books and video
games! But Elliot knows to stick to his toys and even resists eating that
tasty smelling cat food!
Elliot is very active and sometimes keeps me up at night by playing with his
squeaky toys! He loves to cuddle and be around everyone. He's silly and
sometimes clumsy but he always gives me a good laugh. It's just beginning to
snow over here and he's definitely a fan. He loves having his teeth and fur
brushed on a daily basis and he's finally starting to love baths. He isn't
crazy about the blowdryer though. He loves to roll around and get his belly
rubbed. And he loves all kinds of treats, even the ones I made myself! He's a
special little boy with a big heart. I'm happy that I met him and look
forward to spending a huge part of my life with him.
