Cian
and Clare are litter mates, and do just about everything together. It is
eerie how each seems to know what the other is going to do. But their
personalities are very different - Cian is big and goofy, Clare is refined
and more clever. They are very athletic and very fast.
Cian weighs 135 pounds (61 kg). He is a "people" dog and loves to be scratched and
fawned over. He is very outgoing and affectionate. He's a leaner, so you need
to brace yourself. Clare weighs 125 pounds (57 kg) and she is a "dog" dog, always
looking to visit with a dog before a person. She is quite reserved with
people she doesn't know, and always waits for Cian to make the first move.
Cian is needier, always wanting to be near you, while Clare is more
independent and will do her own thing. Clare is the alpha dog and Cian always
defers to her, though she is not the pushy sort.
Irish Wolfhounds don't appreciate the idea of tricks. They won't fetch a
stick or ball, and aren't into games, though they have toys they like to play
with on their own. They do like to "sing", which involves howling in unison,
and they do expect other family members to join in. To stop the singing, a
round of applause is necessary.
As sight hounds,Clare and Cian are fixated on anything that moves. They even
look up and follow airplanes' paths. Birds are fun to chase, but it's the
squirrels and rabbits in the area that better be really fast if they dare to
cross the yard. Somewhat surprisingly, the dogs are not interested in bugs,
toads or snakes. If it doesn't have fur or feathers, it is not worth the bother.
