I
found Luella wandering the streets when she was about seven months old,
nearly five years ago. She happily got into my car. I actually didn't even
know she was a puppy until the vet looked at her teeth. She has always sort
of looked the same, except for the unfortunate fifteen pounds (6.8 kg) she's
gained in the last two years. We are working on that with diet food and a bit
more exercise, though that's not easy in the heat of a South Florida summer.
Luella loves to swim. In the cooler months, I take her to the nearby
Intracoastal waterway and throw sticks for her. She'll go out again and
again, even being overweight. She also enjoys balls, and lately has exhibited
a wonderful talent for soccer! She will run after the ball and put her foot
on top to hold it firmly in place. Good luck trying to kick it (or pick it
up) from under the iron foot. I think she would do great on an obstacle
course, but sadly, her mother (me) is too lazy and affected by heat to pursue
it. One very cute thing about Lu is all the noises she makes, when awake and
when sleeping. She grunts, snorts, and snores. Quite the noisy girl!
Luella shares her home with many cats, a few of whom she dislikes and will
bother, but most of whom she gets along with well. Her best friend is my dog
Ping. He was found in the streets of the same neighborhood one year later
than Lu, and they are the greatest two dogs I could ever wish for. Whoever
abandoned them gave me the best gifts ever.
