Monroe is a really rare find for my family. For years we've had large
black/dark dogs and cats. So getting an almost pure white dog was quite
strange. We decided to name her Monroe because we though she looked like
she was wearing lipstick and eyeliner.
When we adopted her from her shelter we found out she was shipped in
from Puerto Rico, and they told us she was a beagle. (Which was just
their guess, they said.) We took one look at her and we said, "No way is
that dog a Beagle!"
When we brought this bundle of joy home, she HATED treats. So we were
forced to train her without them. Already she's learned sit, "Do you
wannna go out?" (to the bathroom) and lay down. All without treats!
With the speed of a bullet and the power of a steam train, Monroe has
torn right from our grasps more times than we can count. She seems to
have a fondness for her regal name though, so (with a bit of
encouraging, of course) she comes bounding back when called.
Besides all her intense energy, she can be quite the cuddler. I once
came over to visit my parents and after long hours of play time she was
cuddling on my father's shoulder.
Monroe's favorite activity is visiting her best doggie friend, Mimi. As
soon as we pull into her owner's driveway, she's trying to break down
the door! We usually let them loose in the backyard and they chase each
other and roll around in the grass, which earns Monroe a long bath as
soon as we get home. Mimi used to tower over her easily, but now Monroe
is much taller (Though Mimi still has more muscle).
Monroe is a truly one of the most outgoing dogs you will ever meet.
She's tried on multiple (scary) occasions to run across the street just
to greet people. It's hard to even walk with her because she will stop
for every person and try to brighten up their day. Every morning before
I leave the house we spend an hour or so resting or sleeping on the
couch listening to classical music, and sometimes she accompanies me in
the kitchen while I make us breakfast.
Not only is she extremely outgoing, but she's also very brave. On
occasion we bring her to PetSmart with us to pick out new bones or get a
new bag of food, but a few weeks ago when we were there she came
face-to-face with an Alaskan Malamute. And boy was she BIG. For a moment
Monroe had no idea what to do as the giant dog began to sniff her, but
soon enough she was wagging her tail and jumping around like crazy. Long
story short, they became instant friends. Monroe has even managed to
become friends with my two cats, Mitzy and Ivy. Monroe is strangely
sweet, so if she's in a good mood she will try to incorporate my cats
into her games by bringing toys to them. This usually fails with Ivy, so
she ends up getting a playful smack to the face. (No claws I promise).
I have to say that one of the cutest moments with Monroe was when my
sister and her boyfriend visited for my brother's birthday. My sister's
boyfriend is quite shy and never talks to any of us; but as soon as
Monroe leapt onto his lap and pulled at his goatee he was a goner. She
has this wonderful ability to make everyone smile, it's really amazing.
Her favorite toy is her Walking Dead doll that she brings with her to
bed every night. While all her other squeaker toys were destroyed within
the day, she always saves her favorite for later. It's the only toy
that's lasted since we adopted her. It's been a long time since my
family has had a dog, but boy are we glad it's Monroe. <3
