Frankie's been with us just under a year. He was a shelter dog, picked
up from a street in a dodgy part of the Washington DC area. He did not
show well, racing in terrified circles lifting his leg on everything and
everyone. We knew that if we didn't take him, he wasn't long for this
world. We are not sure how old he is, it is estimated he's three to five years
old, we'll never know for certain.
Although there was no evidence of physical abuse, he definitely had been
traumatized. He had trust and abandonment issues. He's come a long way
since we brought him home. Now he follows us around the house and loves
to cuddle up next to us. His abandonment issues seem to be abating as
well. We no longer come home to find a major mess in the basement.
Eventually we'd like to be able to leave him on the first floor when we
go out (trust runs both ways). He views that as his "den" so staying
upstairs will be another adjustment when we are all ready for that. He
still has trust issues with other people, but we continue to work on
that.
Frankie's named after my husband's late mother, Frances. The shelter
said they originally picked him up on June 4, which would have been her
birthday. Although Frances or Francis didn't quite fit him, Frankie sure
did - and still does! We love our Frankie very much.
