Angel is such an appropriate name for my canine nephew, as he watches over his loved ones with gentleness, humor and deep devotion. He had been previously surrendered to a rescue group with another doggie family member, their histories unknown. The poor family who had to make that decision, as they would never know the noble, gentle giant he would become.
Angel has become a therapy dog now who lives with my sister. They are truly soul mates and he has found his forever home and his forever love. Angel has spent long working hours with clients at a group home who have special needs. He provides love, affection and kindness that quite often would not be given to these special people he now considers to be a part of his extended family. I am humbled by his beautiful presence on this planet and how he so loves everyone he meets.
He eavesdrops on every conversation and knows when someone is coming over for a visit. His humorous way of running to the window when the vacuum cleaner comes out acknowledges that a visitor may be on the way and he will be ready to greet them. And then he waits at the door with anticipation and excitement until they arrive.
Angel has an antique chest overflowing with toys and greets all visitors at home with a carefully selected toy in an offering of friendship and love. He loves to go for long walks on the beach and rides in his mom's Miata with the top down, his beautiful golden locks flowing in the wind.
Lately, Angel has been slowing down. This is not usual for this rompster who loves to play and hike. We found out recently that Angel has a very aggressive form of cancer which is located in his sinus cavity behind his eye and is inoperable. We are taking it one day at a time and letting Angel be our guide. If any of you have experienced having an animal family member in this situation, you know what I'm talking about. You know the worry and uncertainty of what might come for your beloved animal companion.
Whatever the future holds for this golden knight in shining armor, it will be a future with unconditional love, deep compassion and a focus on what is the kindest thing for him. Until then, his tail keeps thumping and he will take long naps in the sun, often with other loved ones climbing into his big boy bed with him. Angel knows where he belongs and where he will always reside, in the hearts of everyone who knows and loves him. He's not one in a million; he's simply "The One and Only Angel."
