Bug was
completely paralyzed in all four legs in August 2013. She went from being active and healthy
to being unable to sit up in seconds. After emergency surgery for a herniated disk did not help,
we struggled with whether it was fair to keep her with us in hopes she would recover.
Well, Bug made the decision for us with her incredible positive
attitude, courage, and determination. For eight months, she and I worked
together every day to rebuild strength. Little by little, with the help
of a wheelchair, physical therapy, and lots of love, Bug slowly started
to stand, take a few steps, and then, all on her own, walk again
unassisted. In April 2014, she took her first solo steps and has been
nonstop ever since.
Today, almost a year later, Bug takes walks with her pack, plays, and
enjoys life like any other dog. We still don’t know exactly what caused
such long-term paralysis and there is no clinical explanation for her
recovery. In the face of so many nay-sayers, she proved that the spirit
of a dog can overcome all negativity. She continues to inspire others
with her incredible heart and will to thrive. I am honored to be her mom
and want to share her story with others who might be discouraged when
faced with challenges that seem insurmountable.
