Bear was the only one in his litter that had his brindle coloring, and the only reason we were able to get him was because he was a present from my aunt for my sister's 16th birthday. Since we live out in the country, Bear has had more than his share of run-ins with wild animals. First was a red-tailed hawk when he was a couple months old. The only reason he's still alive is because we were still training him to stay in the yard, so he was on a leash. The vet bills cost $900, which is why my dad likes to call him our 'nine hundred dollar free dog.' He's also had some injuries from raccoons, coyotes, and a squirrel that he tried to catch. Said squirrel now torments him by staying ever so slightly out of reach. None of those injuries were bad enough to go to the vet, though.
He seems to think he's a large dog, because he always tries to play with big dogs, if given the choice. He rarely sits in people's laps, but rather sits next to them, resting his head on them. He also hates to be picked up. We sometimes call him a meerkat, because he can sit only on his hind legs in a 'begging' type pose for more than half and hour. Other than that, he doesn't know any tricks. He doesn't really like small kids touching his ears, since they're very sensitive, but he hasn't bit any of them for pulling on his ears, he just walks away. At one point, my dad taped a popsicle stick to one of his ears because it wouldn't start standing like the other one. We love him!
