This is my dog Walter. I saw him advertised as a free Saint Bernard puppy on Craigslist, and drove 45 minutes to pick him up. I wanted to get a free dog on Craigslist because those are usually the dogs that get used as bait dogs in fighting rings and for animal testing. As soon as I met him, I knew three things- that he definitely wasn't a Saint Bernard, that he was too young to be away from his mother, and that I was taking him home.
When I took him to the vet, they said he was between three and four weeks old, weighed 1.2 pounds, and would still need to be bottle fed. They also found puncture wounds on the back of his neck that came from being picked up and shaken by a bigger animal. He had a really bad infection in his blood, and was given about three days to live.
For the next three weeks, I woke up every three hours to check his temperature, inject his medications, and feed him with an eyedropper. Despite his odds, he will be turning three years old in August of this year! Being bottle fed, he definitely thinks of himself as more human than dog. He loves to do tricks, play with our cats, go to the park, and his favorite hobby is barking out the window at kids on scooters. Don't try to get him to go on a run with you though- every time we've gone running together, I end up having to carry him back to the car!
Walter is a blessing in the lives of so many people. Seeing what he went through as such a young puppy and being able to help him beat his odds has given me so much strength. My family and I are so so lucky to have this little mutt! Oh, and if anyone who sees this has any idea what kind of dog he may be, I'd love to hear!
