Jonathan and I adopted Max in 2008. We got involved and started fostering in 2010. We experienced our first foster failure with Cleo in 2011. No regrets! And I'm excited to announce that we're failing for the second time with our sweet Ruby girl, for so many reasons! This is just some of what we know of her journey:
From what I understand, she originally belonged to some college girls and then ended up in a backyard shed of someone's Uncle. I can't even imagine! Then Ruby came to the Chihuahua Rescue of San Diego for the first time when she was two years old, in 2012. She was in foster care for a year before she was adopted. After three years, her Mama had to go into an assisted living facility and she came back to the rescue. It wasn't long and she was adopted again, but returned within a week. I'm not sure why.
Ruby came into our lives for the first time at the end of September 2016, as our 125th foster. We had her for a week and she was adopted by a great family, but she came back to us because of issues with the landlord. To this day, they love and miss her. She was adopted within a week to another family with kids; this was mid-November. Six months later, just last month in May, Erika reached out to let me know that she needed to bring Ruby back. 'Supposedly' Ruby changed her mind about her feelings towards the two young kids.
This is all heartbreaking! I know it's hard to follow, but we've fostered Ruby three different times. Mind you, we've never had any issues with her whatsoever. She's the perfect girl for us. She's super special to me; we have a connection and a bond that I just can't break again. She is resilient, but she's been through enough. She must must wonder why she keeps moving and having to meet new people. She deserves so much better!
She's had several dates with some awesome folks over the last couple of weeks and none have panned out for various reasons. Well Ruby, your gypsy days are finally over, girl. Your journey ends here. You were meant to be ours. I know that you're happy here and you feel safe with us. Your heart will never be broken again.
I fall in love with all of my fosters and of the 155, there have probably been about a dozen that I really considered keeping, but I always found the strength to let them go. It's different with Ruby. She needs to be smothered with my kisses for the rest of her life and I feel good about this decision.
And don't worry, of course we will continue to foster; I'm too addicted to fostering to stop now. I will never not be a Foster Mama. Welcome home Ruby Rubes. Thanks for choosing us. Love wins!
