Our Havanese was hit by a car and our hearts were broken. After being without a dog For six months we decided to look around in shelters and maybe get another dog. We are In our early seventies, retired and love dogs. We visited so many places, and looked at so many, but the right one had not found us yet. We then saw a picture of a black and white Havanese on the Internet and loved it. We drove down to Ft. Lauderdale to a shelter, but when they brought him out, he was much to wild for us to handle.
The wonderful lady said, "I have a dog who we have had for about two weeks, he seems very shy. We found him walking on the streets, very dirty, thin and hungry. He had a chip in him so we called the number, we said we found your dog, and an elderly woman said, 'We don't want the dog, we let him out a few weeks ago,' and hung up." I was horrified. They brought this skinny, bald white dog out, who immediately jumped up on my lap and went to sleep. We said on the spot, "We'll take him home."
We brought him home that first day and wanted to keep him in the kitchen area, but we soon found out this little guy was a jumper, he almost made it over a little fence. At bedtime we found that he didn't want to stay in the kitchen, so I invited him to bed, he jumped in bed and he's never left our bed since. He is a very warm affectionate dog and he loves to cuddle between my husband and I and we can't go to bed without him. We didn't have that with our Havanese, so we really love that he wants to be near us. We live on water, so he does bark when people walk by or boats go by. He barks and his tail goes very fast when the big birds fly by the windows. He does understand what "stay" means, which is great for me,
I can't walk very fast and he walks slowly for me, he loves to go for walks. At first he wasn't the friendly type with other dogs, but as time has gone on, he is much more friendly and engaging with other dogs. He loves to play with toys, but refuses to play fetch. He likes when I throw them, but won't bring them back. He runs to get them, and takes them to his bed, where all his toys end up.
We have had him now for two years. He just started to give us kisses. He is very afraid of the rain storms, and only likes to be held during a thunderstorm. He is a loving sweet little boy, and a very good dog and we love him very much. hope this will help you to understand him better.
