When I first met Kermit, she was a four-month-old puppy in a pet store in Queens, NY. I had called every pet store in Manhattan looking for a "hot dog- dog," or a red long-haired Dachshund, my original choice of breed. But as fate saw it, "Puppies and Kittens" on Steinway Boulevard called me and said they finally found what I'd been looking for. When I got there, however, I saw Kermit and I forgot all about my other plans. She was jumping all over me, with such a spirit and fire inside, I quickly shelled out the 700 bucks and told them I didn't need the box they were offering me. I carried her to the subway and looked at our reflection in the store windows. We were a perfect match. Both scraggly, with messy hair, shy, nervous and fidgety. There were no camera phones at the time (over 14 years ago!) or at least I didn't own one. I don't have many young pictures of Kermit for that reason, but I remember exactly how I felt. I knew this would be my life partner.
Kermit has been through everything with me. Different careers, moves to different states, bad apartments, nice apartments, boyfriends, and breakups. I've cried on her fur many times. She's always there for me, no matter what stupid decision I've made or what job I've lost or which relationship has ended. I can say with great confidence that Kermit is the greatest thing to ever happen to me. She inspires me and I love her more than anything.
