My little Churro, also known as the "grumpy old man" is dearly missed. He came to me by the way of the Carlsbad Shelter. After seeing many Facebook posts asking for a swift exit from various rescues, this senior boy caught my eye. He was brought in as a stray and not eating and would cry and whimper in his cage. Shelter staff brought fresh chicken from home and would put the food bowl on his pillow and he ate like a king. Churro won people over, that's for sure. Carla at The SNAP rescue (Spay Neuter Action Project) pulled Churro on my behalf. His exam showed he had a low grade heart murmur, collapsed trachea and a hernia. In addition he needed 18 teeth pulled and a neuter. Carla advised this may be a hospice situation, but I was blessed to have almost two full years with my boy.
Churro really grew on me over time. He was my road dog. He went almost everywhere with me. He loved to be in the sling I got for him. We had shopping trips together. He went to breakfast with me and my friends, and he was a frequent visitor to the Ballast Point Brewery. He was non-reactive to other dogs and super easy to take places. I drive for Amazon part time and he would always join me on my routes, riding shotgun. That was our thing and something that I think I will really miss. He slept most of the time, but I just liked him with me. I think he felt the same.
He loved to burrow himself. He had to have belly rubs before his morning walks. He walked super slow and he loved to sniff everything. I loved how when I came home his whole booty shook from excitement. He really loved me with all he had. He was always keeping his eyes on me, watching my every move. Churro was a special boy and made many friends along the way.
I lost my boy only nine months ago and I never imagined how hard it could be. I mean, I knew his days were numbered, but was nowhere prepared for this. His last days included chicken nachos in Old Town. My poor boy went into congestive heart failure and had so much fluid in his lungs, there was no saving him. It was his time to go. He has a special place in my heart. I have no regrets taking care of this senior boy until his last breath and I would do it all over again.
